The measurement guide

How do you measure penis size properly?

Along the top, ruler pressed to the pubic bone, while erect. That single sentence settles most internet arguments about size, because almost nobody measures the same way twice.

Bone-pressed or not: the 2 cm question

The fat pad in front of the pubic bone hides part of the shaft. Press the ruler through it to the bone and you measure the full anatomical length; rest it on the skin and you measure what is visible. The difference is typically 1–2 cm and grows with body fat.

Clinical studies press to the bone. Self-reported surveys are a mix of both, plus optimism. This one inconsistency explains a large share of the differences between published country figures, which is one reason our register grades every source by method.

How to measure penis length, step by step

  1. Measure erect. Flaccid length varies too much to mean anything.
  2. Stand up and hold the penis parallel to the floor.
  3. Place a rigid ruler on the top side, at the base.
  4. Press the end of the ruler gently until it reaches the pubic bone.
  5. Read at the tip. That is your bone-pressed erect length.

Use that number in the penis size calculator: the clinical datasets it compares against are measured the same way.

How to measure girth, step by step

  1. Use a soft measuring tape, or a paper strip you mark and measure afterwards.
  2. Wrap it around the thickest part of the erect shaft, usually mid-shaft.
  3. Snug against the skin, not compressing it.

Girth is what determines your fit in the condom size calculator, so this is the more useful of the two numbers.

Why do self-reported numbers run high?

Rounding up, measuring along the bottom, pressing into the fat pad at an angle, and the simple fact that nobody checks. Averages built on self-report come out 1–2 cm above clinically measured ones. When a figure looks flattering, that is usually why.

Common measuring mistakes

  • Measuring along the side or the underside, which adds length.
  • Using a curved tape for length. Length takes a rigid ruler; girth takes the tape.
  • Measuring flaccid and multiplying by folklore.
  • Measuring once. Take it on a few different days and use the middle value.
