What was actually measured in China?

Scale is the whole story here. The next best-evidenced country in this register is Vietnam with 14,597 men, and after that the numbers fall off a cliff: 3,300 in Italy, 2,276 in Turkey, 2,000 in Egypt, 1,661 in the United States, 1,500 in Iran, and then a long tail, most of it under 500 men. Several countries on the viral map rest on fewer than 100. China has 34,060 men, measured by clinicians, pooled with a published method, with a percentile chart at the end of it.

The largest single Chinese study, Chen 2014, measured 5,196 men at 12.9 cm stretched and then measured erect length in a 311-man subgroup, which also came out at 12.9 cm. That is a rare and valuable thing: the same population measured both ways, agreeing. It is also the exception. Habous found a 2.64 cm gap between the two methods in Saudi men, and Belladelli's pooled figures put stretched a full centimetre below erect worldwide. The relationship is not stable, which is why this site refuses to convert between them.

One finding in the Chinese meta-analysis deserves more attention than it gets. The ratio of erect to flaccid length came out at 67.4 %, against a global figure of 43.5 %. Whatever else that means, it means flaccid length is a bad proxy for erect length, and it is a differently bad proxy in different places. Several countries in this register have nothing behind their claimed figure except a flaccid measurement.
