What was actually measured in United States?

The design is what makes this one worth reading. Men were recruited online, sent instructions, and told that the measurements they returned would determine the size of the condom mailed to them. Nobody was watching, so the numbers are self-reported. But for once a man who rounded up was going to be posted a condom that did not fit, and that is a materially different situation from filling in a survey box.

It shows in the result. The American self-measured mean of 14.15 cm sits about 1 cm above the clinically measured world figure of 13.12 cm, which is at the low end of the 1–2 cm gap that self-report normally opens. Compare the Australian entry in this register, where 184 men in a condom study reported 15.71 cm, or the Italian one, where 4,685 men measuring themselves at home reported 16.78 cm. Same country of origin for the method, very different distance from the clinic.

The United States also carries the longest self-report lineage of any country here. Kinsey collected 2,578 stretched self-measurements in 1950; Bogaert and Hershberger reanalysed 3,228 of those records in 1999. Large, old, and self-reported from the start. King 2019 later showed directly that young men adjust their reported figure with the social desirability of the setting, which is the mechanism the whole map is built on.
